His worship is love of God and service of men. The way to that fellowship is through righteousness, through the kind of life and spirit and attitude to himself which God desires. (Phl 3:9) The spiritual benefits of his gain in Jesus Christ. Jesus and Jesus alone is their joy. I dont have that kind of mind-set. For many walk, of whom I have told you often, and now tell you even weeping, that they are the enemies of the cross of Christ: whose end is destruction, whose god is their belly, and whose glory is in their shame; who set their mind on earthly things. It wasn’t long after the time of Paul that Christians were martyred for refusing to call Caesar Lord, claiming that Jesus was the only Lord. The New Testament In the Christian life there is no room for a person who desires to rest upon his laurels. (ii) As far as the Law went, he was a trained Pharisee. iii. He was far more qualified than his legalizing opponents were to make such a claim. He regards these people as enemies of the cross of Christ. The foundation for his spiritual life was in what Jesus had done for him and not in what he had done, was doing, or would do for Jesus in the future. Therefore let us, as many as are mature, have this mind; and if in anything you think otherwise, God will reveal even this to you. B. Lightfoot remarks that the verb memphesthai (Greek #3201), from which it comes, means to blame for sins of omission. There were those who distorted the Christian doctrine of grace. Biblical Commentary (Bible study) Philippians 3:4b-14 EXEGESIS: THE CONTEXT: THE BROAD CONTEXT: Paul and Silas founded the church in Philippi. When Paul stated that he was of the tribe of Benjamin, it was a claim that he was not simply an Israelite but that he belonged to the highest aristocracy of Israel. It is used to mean mature in mind and therefore means one who is qualified in a subject as opposed to a mere learner. Paul had indeed suffered the loss of all things that he might gain Christ. Commentary on Philippians 1:3-11 View Bible Text The opening comments and introduction in Paul’s letters often give us an insight into something of the key aspects of what will follow in the letter as a whole, but also an insight into the life of the church to whom the letter is written and their relationship with Paul. THE PRIVILEGES OF PAUL (Philippians 3:4-7). This wasn’t merely theological theory and ideas, but a lived-out connection with God. e. I more so: Paul knew that he was more qualified to be justified by the keeping of the law than any of his present legalistic opponents were. According to Jewish belief, circumcision was ordained upon Israel as sign and symbol that they were the people with whom God had entered into a special relationship. iv. 1. ii. He could say as he also did in 1 Corinthians 11:1 – Imitate me, just as I also imitate Christ. In Leviticus the sacred law-giver says that the uncircumcised hearts of Israel must be humbled to accept the punishment of God (Leviticus 26:41). In summary, if anyone could lay claim to pleasing God by law-keeping and the works of the flesh, it was Paul. Paul claims that there was no demand of the Law which he did not fulfil. He is able even to subdue all things to Himself and accomplish something as amazing as the resurrection of our bodies after the pattern of Jesus’ resurrection. Poetical Books Paul would admit that they have a concern for works, but they were evil workers. And now tell you even weeping: The work and the end of these enemies was that they, in their disregard for God’s holiness, gave ammunition to the legalist’s accusation that Paul preached a cheap grace that required no commitment of the life. Every teacher must be more anxious to listen to God than to propagate his own opinions or he, too, will run the risk of being a worker of evil, even when he thinks that he is a worker of righteousness. But, it might be argued, that was a snap decision, perhaps later to be regretted and reversed. He was never ashamed to confess his shame and to tell men that once he had hated the Christ whom now he loved and sought to obliterate the Church which now he served. This is an important idea; yet sometimes Christians react to that idea by being passive. He had experienced it at its highest point; and he knew that it was nothing compared with the joy which Christ had given. Denomination: Christian/Church Of Christ. And, therefore, even in circumstances where joy would seem to be impossible and there seem to be nothing but pain and discomfort, Christian joy remains, because not all the threats and terrors and discomforts of life can separate the Christian from the love of God in Christ Jesus his Lord (Romans 8:35-39). Yet indeed: “The translation of five particles, which latter are literally translated, ‘yea, indeed, therefore, at least, even,’ and show the force and passion of Paul’s conviction.” (Wuest). It is a deception to live either in the past or in the future; God wants us to press on in the present, because the present is where eternity touches us now. (ii) He was of the race of Israel. You will never get into a right relationship with God by your own efforts in keeping the Law. e. Beware of evil workers: This describes both what these legalists do (working evil), but was also a word against their emphasis on righteousness with God by works. Therefore let us, as many as are mature, have this mind: Those who are really mature will have this mind. There were those who distorted the principle of Christian liberty. For them there was the possibility of the same kind of persecution, and even the same kind of death, as threatened himself. If we are citizens of heaven, it means that we are resident aliens on earth. The tribe of Benjamin had the place of honour in Israel's battle-line, so that the battle-cry of Israel was: "After thee, O Benjamin!" When Paul said, “That I may lay hold,” he used strong language. But if you will hand over the conflict to Jesus, He will subdue them; He will bring them under his strong, subjecting hand. The idea is that a man's Christian maturity cannot go beyond martyrdom. So this is Paul's answer to the Jewish teachers. This first counting was at his conversion; the second – some 30 years later – was in his Roman prison. This was all done with the idea that someone must become a Jew first before they could become a Christian. The very language Paul uses to describe the Law--excrement--shows the utter disgust for the Law which his own frustrated efforts to live by it had brought him; and the joy that shines through the passage shows how triumphantly adequate he found the grace of God in Jesus Christ. d. Let us be of the same mind: Part of doing what we do know is being of the same mind. Who they were is not certain. conservative Christian faith, which includes a firm belief in the inerrancy Again and again he speaks of it (Acts 22:2-21; Acts 26:4-23; 1 Corinthians 15:8-10; Galatians 1:13). Philippians 3:11 is literally, “if somehow I may attain to the out-resurrection from among the dead ones.” The word “out-resurrection” occurs here only. Paul means something when he applies the title to Jesus in the context of citizenship. a. This is what grieved Paul so at their teaching. But what things were gain to me, these I have counted loss for Christ. (iii) It means to be so united with Christ that day by day we come more to share in his death, so that finally we share in his Resurrection.
